Will Johnson leads the physicists who have stabilized dark matter, at the site of a large hadron collider. During testing, a person starts to form in the dust particles, just as the machine shuts itself down. As the world reacts, Will dies in a motorcycle crash.
Prior to his death, Will had been having an affair with one of his team members, and he now fears he will go straight to hell. Instead, he finds life after death is as real and scientific as mortal life. He still sees the mortal world he was accustomed to, but now he also sees other ex-mortals, as well as a race of beings who claim never to have been mortal. These beings are led by Azzoloft, whom Will initially mistakes for the devil.
Azzoloft’s identity remains obscure, but his technological aspirations are, in fact, diabolical: Azzoloft intends to transform himself and his followers into indestructible beings with the appearance of humans, using the particles Will and his team discovered. Will learns he cannot stop them unless he can change who he is, and what he has become, before it is too late.
